Mandela’s Home

This is Mvezo in the Eastern Cape where Nelson Mandela was born:

Cooking is still done at dusk and dawn using a fire outside.
The children are gorgeous and energetic.

It’s high up on a ridge, with a deep river below

90 years from the time Mandela was born, and still the women and children have to walk kilometres every day to fetch their water – down to the bottom of the valley and the river.
The water carriers:
At the age of 9 – Mandela moved to Mqhukekezweni – another village.
And grew up in this hut:

Which is now home to a litter of puppies (we were offered one – but my cats would eat it – even if it was born in Mandela’s hut!)
